Overview

In 1991 Miami, Dexter Morgan transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can't be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements' radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Simply put, not good.

The unimaginative and rather cheesily titled "Dexter Original Sin" is, unlike the original series, about as subtle as a meat clever.

The sense of light, sophisticated handling associated with the original series, is largely absent.Instead, the treatment is over the top, at times bordering on the ridiculous. We see Dexter looking at a girly mag but no he's really fawning over news cuttings of serial killer Ted Bundy wedged between its pristine pages. Oh and his sister ends up passed out drunk at a party about to be raped but after Dexter intercedes to save her, she can still apparently "take care of herself". Clearly, as we have just seen, that's not true.

Its this kind of low brow, unintelligent nonsense, with a dash of woke BS, that sinks this series to the bottom. As is so often the case too, its a shame, as its a decent cast who have come together for this bloody debacle.

In summary, all the trappings of success can't make up for the absence of a well crafted, intelligent, believable story. I adored the original Dexter because its everything, this lifeless facsimile, is not. An emphatic pass from me.

A pretty good prequel to Dexter. Better than that new blood sequel, or whatever it was called. I guess that's why there's only one season of that.

If course, it's still Dexter, so it has a ton of plot holes, ridiculous conveniences, silly scenarios, etc. But then again, it's Dexter, so it's entertaining and gripping if you crank up your suspension of disbelief. It's worth it.

The casting has some eerily similar actors. Like Angel and the lab partner, I mean holy crap, it's hard to believe it's not the same actors thrown in a time machine. Deb on the other hand, what is going on there? I mean, Deb in the contemporary Dexter show is borderline anorexic. This younger actor is chubby and gets more overweight for each episode. I mean, wow, in episode 10! How did they not instruct her to lose weight as part of the contract. Deb is my favorite character in the contemporary Dexter, and Jennifer Carpenter just burns through the screen in every episode. This younger actor has a foul mouth and an attitude, too, which is great, but she looks nothing like Deb. Gonna be interesting to see if there's a plot planned for her starting to starve herself for some reason.
